Our CommunityJambo Tanzania’s Kashambya Hospital is located in Gera, a town in the Kagera region of Tanzania. With a population of 2.5 million, the Kagera region is in the northwestern corner of Tanzania on the western shore of Lake Victoria. This region is comprised of banana plantations and vanilla bean plantations where many of the local residents work. The average per capita income in Kagera is $250 USD, and the average per capita income in Gera is $100 USD. The population is afflicted by severe health issues, including maternal child death, pulmonary inflictions, sexually transmitted diseases, malnutrition, etc. The nearest hospital is 10 kilometers from Gera and lacks many of the attributes of adequate healthcare: limited surgical care capabilities, limited support and funding, infrastructure (water supply, electricity, paved/safe roads), etc. |
